Blasts From My Past! Now A “Cult Classic”!

Wow. The “lost” episode of WAY USA (Niagra Falls), directed by Peter Lauer, starring Tesco Vee, was one of my first productions ever. Hopefully one day that tape will also surface, but it is great to see the first episode of the show itself has returned to pop history, and even better to be elevated into the realm of “the greatest cult video you’ve probably never seen“.  I have long been a fan of Dangerous Minds, but now I am even more so for sourcing this and bringing it to our attention.

The director Peter Lauer was in an incredible batch of original MTV interns that graduated into the director class the subsequent year.  If my memory serves it included Mark Pellington, Ted Demme, John Polson and others.  I think my first production with Peter was the “Run’s House” video for MTV.  In those days, in addition to producing, I  also AD’d the shoot. Peter’s concept for the video was to create riots wherever we filmed. I believe we closed down both 125th street and Times Square on the shoot. If memory serves me, if you look closely you can find the 24 year old me caught on camera (kinda akin to a similar moment I have in Jem Cohen’s Fugazi doc INSTRUMENT), but to tell the truth, I can’t find me in when I look through it now.

I did a couple of videos with Peter, including Rob Base’s “It Takes Two“. I remember doing MTV spots with him and some of the original VJ’s, like Alan Hunter.  We never did get to make a movie though. In the universe where everything goes as I want, WAY USA would have been a huge hit and an ongoing show, as big as RUN DMC perhaps.  But it is a joy for me to go back now.

Diary of a Film Start-Up: Post # 45: VOD Myths vs. Reality

By Roger Jackson
KinoSmall

Previously: $45 Billion by 2018

At Kinonation we talk to dozens of filmmakers every week, and often discuss myths about Video-on-Demand. Here’s my top ten…

1. Myth: Every VOD outlet will accept my film.

Reality: Most outlets select or decline films at their discretion and rarely give reasons for a “NO” decision. In the USA, only Amazon and Google Play accept all films. (Amazon is limited to Amazon Instant Video. Amazon Prime will typically reject films that contain drug use, sex, nudity, violence, etc.)

2. Myth: Theatrical creative will work for VOD

Nobody Knows Anything #7: Archetype Theory

By Charles Peirce

Nobody7-300Originating in the thinking of Plato but finding its modern applications from the work of Carl Jung, Archetype Theory is a way of looking at and defining the world that has numerous uses, particularly in marketing and storytelling. At the least, Archetype Theory gives a structural thematic underpinning to organize ideas around. At the greatest, Archetype Theory might allow a primal, subconscious form of resonance and communication with audiences — speaking to them beyond the limits of language.

A Pledge To Sarah. A Pledge To Safety.

Bad decisions are easily made.  The strength of those around us offer insurance that such choices might be overcome. We all have to stand up for what matters most. Passion industries, particularly like film, are not driven by logic, or often ethics. We want to create beauty.  We want a career doing close to what we love. Power appears to be in the hands of a few specific individuals and often in order to please them, we are tempted to compromise our common sense. We have to protect each other.

If you have ever made a movie, you can imagine what may have happened on the set of “Midnight Rider” when on a pre shoot day, camera assistant Sarah Jones was killed trying to get a shot.  This is not the first time that a similar thing has happened on a set. We have all heard tales of bad choices made by producers, directors, assistant directors, and other crew.  We all know we can do more to limit them from happening again. We have to protect each other. We can do better.

In the wake of this most recent loss, a movement has started.  Please visit

Beer Buzz #3: Audience Building — The Key to Success Building

By Steven C. Beer

In the marketing and distribution of independent films, the most critical and frequently overlooked key to success is the building of an audience. Whether you pursue traditional or alternate distribution platforms, or a combination thereof, your ability to identify, aggregate and mobilize an audience base directly impacts the prospect of your project’s success. Timing your audience building campaign is crucial. According to Jason Ward of Candy Factory Productions, you must begin to target and recruit your supporters the minute you decide to produce a film. Audience building is a slow and steady process that can take many months, if not years, so a multi-step game plan that evolves over time can serve as an audience building blueprint. Here are some tips I learned while moderating the Audience Building Panel at the New York Lounge at Sundance 2014:
