Let's Make Better Films

The Future Is Here! almost…

It’s INDEPENDENT FILM WEEK here in NYC. Although I haven’t participated in many events, the activity and others efforts are benefiting me and everyone else greatly. The intense focus on and embrace of the coming reality is completely inspiring.

Instead of the negative view towards a changing paradigm, people are recognizing that the benefits of being part of a audience driven (the crass like to say “consumer”) model and the abandonment of the gatekeeper/limited supply past. Somehow I find it ironic that this recognition of the change from a top down to a bottom up (or push vs. pull) film industry structure is occurring simultaneously with an economic collapse and hopeful presidential power shift. The current financial crisis in America has been compared to the collapse of the Berlin Wall, in that unregulated capitalism is literally bankrupt, like authoritarian states with communist run economies previously collapsed. The film industry paradigm shift is not of the same seismic shift, but it is the biggest change we’ve had in our little corner.

On Monday night, I had the good fortune to be invited to a dinner put together by Lance Weiler and Arin Crumley & Susan Buice. These filmmakers have not only embraced the new world but have been inspiringly innovative in their efforts to reach, build, and motivate audiences. The dinner was a spin off of their DIY Days. I have been making films for twenty years now and the business model has never truly worked for the films I make and want to make. Yet, this was the first time that ANYONE has pulled together a brainstorming session on what to do about that, and for that alone these folks are elevated to True Indie Film Heroes on my chart. More on this dinner later (they filmed/recorded it), but check out everything you can about what these filmmakers are doing (if you haven’t already) and you can watch the future arrive.

These People Can Draw Draw Draw!

This is a week of wall doodling from Japan.  Black on white, then white on black, then white on that, and so on, and so forth, until….  well, check it out.  It makes me want to get some really big paper!

Thanks to Doodlage for the tip!

Science Rocks

Schoolhouse Rock will always be one of the great inventions of the TV era.  It taught so many grammar, math, and civics.  But as far as I know, it never ventured into science.

Thankfully we now live in an age where everyone can create and distribute (at least for now — ask your parents about “Net Neutrality” and how that may be taken away from us), and some good science minded folk have come up with a great rap about the search for anti-matter and dimensions beyond the three we currently recognize.  You may not understand it all, but it’s got a good beat you can dance to, and lots of awesome machines to see, like Particle Accelerators.

The Large Hadron Collider just went into action this week.

9/21 Update: They’ve just down the Hadron Collider for two months.  BBC has more video footage though…

Ritual Demon Subjugation Dances

They are being performed free all over NYC this week.  Maybe this will make sure Obama is our next president.  Get out demons!

The dances are performed by 13 monks from Bhutan.  FreeNYC has the whole schedule here.  And these are those dances:

Homemade Doctor Who

It’s the weekend, so we are watching the Doctor.  We are almost done with Season Two.  Soon we will have to say good-bye to Rose.  It’s tough to get enough.  I am sure that they can’t make them fast enough.

Thankfully, the fans have started to make their own.  BoingBoing tipped us to this “sweded” adventure.  It’s gets big points for the Dalek costume.

A Rainy Day Adventure

Okay, it would have to be a VERY longgggg…. rainy day, but….

Here’s a 10,000 page coloring book!  So what if they only have come up with 600 of the pages so far.  Picture how tall the book will be!  Picture what it would look like if you wallpapered your apartment with the sheets you colored in!  If you had put each drawing up somewhere in your town, where would each one go?
Better get those crayons out.  Colored pencils if you prefer, but what a marvelous project regardless.  Now I can’t wait for the storm clouds to come in.

Decrease Your Junk Mail

Back in June, we told you how to stop credit solicitations. In August, it was how to opt out of  both credit solicitations and phone sales.   Now is your chance to do the same with junk mail. It’s only in it’s Beta stage, but ProQuo is here to save your day — and a few trees. Did you know:

Each year, 100 million trees are used to produce junk mail in America. That’s the equivalent of deforesting the entire Rocky Mountain National Park every four months.

Americans receive nearly four million tons of junk mail each year.

More than 28 billion gallons of water are wasted to produce and recycle junk mail each year.

Check it out. It’s pretty simple.  They also have a good list of 10 Creative Ideas Of What To Do With Your Junk Mail here.
