These Are Those Things

Transforming The Neighborhood

In my dreams, NYC transforms overnight.  Manhattan is no longer the island of the super-rich.  The ubiquitous advertising is gone.  Everything is art.  In fact it looks a lot like The Heidelberg Project outside of Detroit.  This alone is a reason for a trip to Michigan.

The Heidelberg Project was started in response to the homes left abandoned after the ’67 Detroit Riots.  Tyree Guyton (and his wife and father) got the kids together and went-a-decorating.  It’s truly inspiring.

Dancing Fool

And I mean that in the best possible way.  We all need to dance, just like we all need to laugh.  I think this proves both.  What a way to see the world!  42 countries, including outer space!  And all with happy feet (thanks to Ellen D. for the tip!)

P.S. No saying the title around the house.  That is, no saying it without your parents’ permission.

Best Film of 2008: Blu

I saw another installation/film of Blu’s awhile back at a gallery in NYC with my family and we were blown (bluwn?) away.  In that one you could see him painting the animation but this one, sans human, with the sun and clouds working as the clock, adds onto the prior one’s promise.

Right now, this is my favorite film of the 2008.  This guy’s imagination soars — and thus does the same for mine.  My son had loved the first one as much as I did.  You might want to scout this one first before screening for the young ‘uns as it is a tad freaky — but good freaky fun if you ask me.
Of course it is ultimately graffiti and you may have to explain that one, less your walls start to change.  Not to mention the explanation on why Buenos Aires is looking cooler than NYC.

The Next Good Idea

Room To Move

Eventually you will be able to find out everything about anything, and someday you won’t even have to work hard to find it.  Not that I want any life other than Even More Knowledge, but part of me already feels like we are in The Days Of Too Much Information.  Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me and  a little more ignorance wasn’t bliss, but studies have shown that those that don’t accept basic facts (that we are destroying the planet, our freedoms are being reduced, opportunities are being diminished — that kind of thing) are far happier than those of us that do.

I think THIS site is a really good idea nonetheless.  Presumably Tripkick is designed to keep you out of that hotel room by the service elevator and the one that overlooks trash alley.  The miserablist in me relishes it for when you can only get a specific room and you want to know just how bad the trip is going to be.  Of course though, like most things, it’s only catering to the high end of life, so unless your life is consistently in high six figures you are stuck still with the luck of the draw.
