Hi-end Junkbots

Okay, these aren’t made out of trash.  Or at least this trash has been power cleaned.  That said, I am impressed with ____’s work.  These are pretty fun creatures.

And then there is this guy, who makes his out of old typewriters.  Typewriters?  What are those?  Well when a pen would not suffice, back in the days before computers, we wrote words on them.

Robo Fish: How Stuff Works Videos

As cool as they are just being there, robots teach us a lot of things.  And they are still sooo cool; imagine that!

These robofish certainly deserved to be in the last robot roundup, but hey, there’s only so much space, time, and candy (wait, what’s candy got to do with anything?).
How Stuff Works is one of the great websites out there with tons of stuff on all kinds of stuff.  When you get tired of silly videos on YouTube, or your parents say it’s time to watch something educational, go to their video channel.  Bookmark it today.

Recent Robot Roundup

Let’s face it, the world needs more robots.  We certainly need more in our house and we have three or four.  We thought we’d have our own equivalent of cattle drive and run our favorites right into your home.  Which ones would win in the battle of the bots?

Of course, it’s probably more useful just to have a bunch of robo pals to hang out and dance with, like these guys…
On the smaller scale there is the infamous Bristle-bot.  He is pretty cute. I dreamt that instead of cockroaches, our apartment was infested with them.
And what are you going to do when you just GOTTA have a new bot?  Our little creature runs here.
Although RadioShack now stocks these little guys and they are pretty cool.  And now the robo firm has come up with this shopper robot so the grown up can stay home and operate remotely via a phone and video hook up.

We just got a subscription to ROBOT magazine too, and find it full of things to spark the imagination.

Bionicle Rock Video

I was in high school when somehow the entire student body burst into a spontaneous version of “We Will Rock You”.  I didn’t like the song then, but I’ve witnessed it become a parody of itself to the point that I can’t help but love that it now exists.

Bionicles are some sort of equivalent to that song.  Although I love watching my son create new beings with their endless combinations, and there is something truly great about how the design of the pieces practice a “complicated is cool” devotion, they also possess the same bombastic essence as Queen’s clobbering beat.
I am waiting for some genius to make the great comical animated Bionicle video for us all to laugh with, but for now this clip’s closing guitar solo gets some serious props.

Kami Robo!

Kami-Robo are robot fighters made from paper, measuring 15 to 20 cm. high.  They have joints at the hips, knees, shoulders, elbows and waists which allow them to bend and move quite freely.  About twenty-six years ago,  Tomohiro Yasui started designing and making these fighters, creating an extensive mythology and heirarchy in the process.  They fight in a ring, but it totally tops pro-wrestling with its drama and keen moves.  NOW the whole world is kami-robo crazed.  You can build your own, or even buy ready-made ones if you are a tad lazy — or in a hurry to join in the fun (so far the only place we’ve found them is at the MOMA store.  There’s lots of great videos on the web too.  This one below gives you a good intro course on their whole story.

Recommended Viewing #3: Nausica Of The Valley Of The Wind

NAUSICA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND (1992) was the first film of Studio Ghibli (even before they were Studio Ghibili!).  It’s got everything in it, from the first seeds of steampunk, robots, a great female youthful heroine, and an environmental message (plus another one of how aggression is often a cry for love…).  We’ve watched it numerous times, have the figures, and our very own pet fox-squirrel.

Dalek Chocolate Cake

Theo’s Mom has got the DOCTOR WHO bug and she’s got it good.  She found this for The Bowl and although we’ve done reptile parties (where the giant lizard let loose in the most nasty way all over my office!), parties with magicians, and even a bionicle birthday, I now know we haven’t even really lived yet.  I have seen the vision of the ultimate chocolate nightmare and here it is.  If only I had the courage to bake it…  Where’s my sonic screwdriver when I need it?
