Got A Roof? Wonder How Good It Is For Solar Power?

Roofray is a clever website.  I first read about here at Freshome.  It has all the tools to determine the potential of any roof to generate solar power.  It allows you to compare options, calculate the financials, essentially make the right decision of what system to buy.

Save Trees? Pay People NOT To Cut Them Down

This seems like a simple and very good idea — even the United Nations is behind it: want to keep some trees on the planet?  Pay the people who own them, NOT to cut them down.  People pay for them to do the opposite, yet the entire world benefits, particularly the developed nations, i.e. big carbon producers.

Good Ideas On The Financial Crisis

Jon Taplin is always thoughtful.  And he’s an excellent curator; his front page photo here can’t be beat.  I have to say the ideas he proposes here make good sense to me:

  1. Fannie and Freddie should aggressively go into the market buying mortgages, TODAY.
  2. The FDIC should raise the guarantee on bank deposits to $250,000 per account, TODAY.
  3. The Fed should suspend for six months the mark to market accounting rule on mortgage securities or create some other rule that would allow banks to keep frozen mortgage paper segregated on their balance sheets.
  4. FDIC should force every bank to deliver an audited statement of all of their holdings including Credit Default Swaps withing 30 days. Transparency is the soul of confidence.

Thanks Dan!

Science Lab Rock

Schoolhouse Rock was a flash of brilliance. Kids (and Adults) will always be able to remember songs better than most other rules. Schoolhouse addressed grammar, math, and civics, but science has been left to swim for itself. We just blogged about it for the kids over at Bowl Of Noses, but felt it ranked here too.

Won’t somebody take the challenge laid down by this rap below, and teach us all about how the universe really works?

Unfortunately, the Hadron Collider had to be shut down for two months on 9/21/08.

Promise To Vote And Wilco Will Give You Dylan

On one hand it’s absurd, what with the country in the shape that it is in, that anyone would need further incentive to vote.  On the other, sometimes people need to pledge things to their friends and family in order to actually go out and do them.

And of course, if you’ve already delivered great music for over a decade, evolved, changed, and proven yourself in virtually every way, how do you earn even further allegiance.
And when presented with the opportunity to distribute creations far and wide with barely an expense, how do you use this gift in good ways to get more done (and perhaps help people realize what will soon be lost if we lose Net Neutrality…).
Well, Wilco looked at this world and came up with a really good idea.
thanks BoingBoing!

Custom Kicks

I have particularly enjoyed the spectator sport of Clown Shoe Watching.  In my little town, the feet just keep on pushing it further and further, keeping it lively the lower I go.  The pursuit of personal expression hits another notch courtesy of SNEAKART, designers of stickers for your sneakers.  Get your orders in fast as free shipping ends Oct 19th.
