Robot Cupcakes

I wonder if I opened a cupcake shop in the West Village and had the Boing Boing tour bus stop by, whether we’d have the same lines that Magnolia has.  Personally, I vote for Billy’s, but I would change my allegiance if any store featured these.

The Girl Effect

Girl Effect is a new social action organization based around the idea that when you empower one girl  to have the opportunity to participate in her society, powerful social and economic change results.  It’s also a nice bit of text animation too, from NY animation house Curious Pictures.  I not only like this idea, but I like how well they have personalized social change and used the internet.  It’s been demonstrated how well microloans work, particularly with women in developing economies, to facilitate social change.  Here, they also bring hope.

Marketing Pranks

I hate always being sold to.  But I love the clever ways they come up with to do it.  What can I say this is a very good idea.

Bizarre Buildings

I like to think my son loves bizarre buildings, but I know I love showing them to him.  As many as there are, I want more, more, more!   I do know he’s an excellent LEGO builder so all the viewing I subject him to has got to have some benefit for the boy.

Listverse is a great website, although not always as suitable for the younger set as this selection.

Carbon Footprint Label

We have labels on our food to alert us as to what is in it, shouldn’t we also know the environmental costs of the products we consume?  If we knew that when we drink ordinary water imported from Fiji, we are contributing X to the carbon emission crisis, would we change our habits?  How would we get manufacturers to post a simple label on all products?

The New York Times had a relevant article back in April, posted here.  Evidently, Tesco, Britian’s largest supermarket chain has voluntarily introduced just such a system.  Can we import that?

Tuna Calculator

I am not sure how many things I have on my I-Know-Its-Bad-For-Me-But-I-Just-Don’t-Want-To-Stop List, but I am sure sushi rates at the top of the list.  The FDA’s proposed recommendation of 12 ounces of fish a week per person could result in people getting an unsafe level of mercury into their system, particularly women.  So use the Tuna Calculator!
