Like most of us, I wander around the web and like to get lost. The best times are when from being lost, I am found. You know what I mean? You know how sometimes you find something that feels like they wrote it or built it just for you? I like that. I like that a lot.
It’s happened a few times for me in 2013. I thought I would share it with you. The following folks are doing great posts, and I only just stumbled upon them this year (2013).
- James’ Belfer’s “I’m An EP” blog & “Dogfish Accelerator” – The Film Industry gave up trying to differentiate between financing producers and creative producers decades ago. It’s very unfortunate and an insult to both as they are very different skills. James returns to the divide and demonstrates the benefits of a financing producer who thinks creatively about the business. As a creative producer, that is what I would want on my team.
- Colin Brown‘s “Filmonomics” – There are not many times when I read film articles and say to myself, I wish they would write a book. I have been very pleased to cross-post his Slated posts on this blog. Colin brings a greater clarity to the math and thinking behind film investment.
- CinephiliaAndBeyond – This is nothing short of a film lover’s paradise. From Bernard Herman mixes to Ray Bradbury’s script for Moby Dick to a wonderfully well curated group of photos of days gone by. Beware you may not come back for hours.
- Stephen Follows http://stephenfollows.com – Stephen drills on data to discover truths about the film industry. Totally worth a read. Recent posts include “How many films do people make in an average career?” and “Data on improving your crowd funding campaign”, and “WithoutABox’s dirty little secret”.
- KeyFrame Daily, edited by David Hudson (and presented by Fandor — where I am now CEO) – If you love film, particularly art film, you can not afford to miss this, or else risk missing great and curious film.
- Adam Leipzig’s Cultural Weekly – aims to “elevate the conversation on the cultural landscape”, providing everything from poems to perspective.
- Mynette Louie – Although Mynette is just at the start of her producing career, she has recognized that the job of producing includes lifting the community’s knowledge base. She has delivered good & substantive blog posts & articles consistently through Filmmaker & the IFP. She has recognized the need to have a team behind you and taken on the guidance of Gamechanger. I look forward to all that they do change.
- Impact Partners – I am re-impressed each year by the work that Dan Cogan & Geralyn Dreyfous are doing. They deliver quality social issue docs at a rate few could ever dream of. Beyond that though, their model of a subscriber-based investment coalition is the inspiration behind much of my Sustainable Investor Class mission.
- MovieCityNews – it is my first stop for film news. I like that it is just links. They cover a wide range. I don’t know what I would do if it wasn’t for them.
- OnTheMedia.org – So often I turn into this NPR show/podcast by Bob Garfield & Brooke Gladstone and feel like it is written for me. It is exactly what I want to know about.
- Sampomedia – “Connecting creativity to audiences” is their motto. Need I say more?

- MetaFilter – community posting breaking cultural news with appreciation, perspective, and wit. Beware: highly addictive.
- Ryan Koo’s NoFilmSchool.com providing up to the minute advice on film tech and equipment and a whole lot more.
- Brian Newman & his Sub-genre site
- OpenCulture – great curating of pop culture
- Jon Reiss
