Don’t Hide. Declare You Are Here & Plan To F*ck Sh*t Up

By Ted Hope

And I mean that with all the love I have for the world.

Let’s be frank:

  • You want to get your movie made.
  • You want to live a creative life.
  • You want to give voice to the unspoken and the underheard.
  • You know you can do it — if only you get a chance.

What are you waiting for?  Don’t ask for permission. Don’t wait to be discovered.  And don’t expect to get any help.  Who needs it?

John Singleton at Film Independent’s Filmmaker Forum recently stated

“ For someone that’s been in the business for over 20 years, it’s never easy — getting into it the business or sustaining yourself in it. You can’t be shy, you can’t be a shrinking violet — that’s not something that you should be projecting to the world when you’re an indie artist. You have to tell yourself you’re going to have to have the resolve and have to endure no matter how many doors close on you.”

Yup.  Speak up.  Louder.  Often.

No one is going to help you (generally speaking). And if you don’t expect to find any help from anyone anywhere, those few times that you do, you will recognize them for the tremendous gifts that they are, and you will hold on to them, respect them, nourish them, and learn to lead from them.

Some people will take more than they give.  Some people will break more than they build.  That’s what to expect and by doing so, you will be able to spot it, stop it, and drop it.  And you don’t have to participate, just because that’s how they play their game.  Those are some people you just don’t need.

Don’t waste time with the haters, those folks that block you from making, or refuse to see the beauty or the glory in that rough nasty bit of business you think is your art.  Noble failures are gems looking for some polish.  You know it and maybe one or two others. That’s all you need.  And the stamina to climb up on that horse every time you get knocked off, hopefully learning from that flaw and capitalizing on that opportunity.

So what are you waiting for?  You know you can do it better.  It’s their eyes that can’t see the truth.  Their vision has been blurred by their experience.  You have a thousand words for snow (or is that love).  Respect the gray, and all it’s shades.  Often those who stand too close can’t even see where they are.  And you know what?  At Film Independent’s Filmmaker Forum, John Singleton went on to say:

“I think it’s easier to make a film now than ever before, you can shoot with a 5D, iphone, ipad. Movies are experimenting with different platforms and this business is evolving and changing, distributors are popping up like weed dispensaries.  There is a lot of opportunity for independent filmmakers.  You just have to be persistent in your vision and your goals to pursue that decision.”

So little is free.  Many gift givers seek something in return.  We are all in this together so lending a hand is not a favor.  It does take a village, but together we can build it better.  Enough with the slogans, time is a wasting.  Survival is hard but self expression is a wonderful reward that truly unites us.  Maybe one day all will recognize the value.  And that will be quite swell.  Being true to your heart and ideas is a revolutionary act.  I think the world is ready for you to get it done.

Great, awesome, fantastic advice for filmmakers. Never ask permission to be successful!

  2. Jason Wolos / Nov 7 at 8:30am

This is so great, so true… for filmmakers and for all creative types. You know you can do it.

  3. Jon Jost / Nov 7 at 8:30am

Uh, while I suppose Mr Singleton is a zillion times more “successful” than I am, I beg to differ with his advice (unless your intention is flat-out commercial – which in his case it is, in which case he is correct, and also prepared to get screwed over, stepped on, etc. as that is part of that world). I cite an example: Nathaniel Dorsky, whom I have known now 25 plus years, never pushed or even let others (like me) try to push for him. Instead he did his work in relative obscurity, making his rent money as a “film doctor” in the Bay Area. His work has grown in process, guided only by his inner lights, having ZERO to do with the film world and its pressures. His work is, in my humble view, miraculous and 1000 times more important than 99% of so-called “indie” films which are mostly pale copies of commercial formulas. And, while he hardly makes fantastic money (with silent, short, non-narrative films?!), of late he’s had retrospectives, lots of festival invitations, etc. And he’s a real artist, not a phoney wanna-be indie trying to make commercial films (like Singleton) and pretending it is “art.”

Lame and backwards. Everyone should not be encouraged to make art. There are too many average or below average filmmakers as it is. If being an artist means being an extroverted networker then some very important creative and introverted people will slip right past us while people who can shmooz will make more films like the indie films of late. Bad advice.

  5. Ted Hope / Nov 7 at 8:30am

There is more than one way to skin a cat. Good movies are not getting seen. Even more potentially great artists are not able to sustain a creative practice. A great deal of what is needed to get a movie made comes from courage and commitment. Sure, one also must have the discipline to fully consider their work and what they have to say, generally speaking, in order to make a good film. There are also many different audiences and communities with a wide variety of wants and needs that have yet to be satisfied. Far too many people wait to be discovered or think that their first or second foray into the field should yield the work they’ve dreamed of. To carry oneself over the barricades or down the road closer to the realm of possibility, I still think it is important advice for most. I know it helped me. I don’t believe I have seen any of your films PB but I hope you’ve enjoyed some of mine. I look forward to yours.

Thank you. This is very good to hear.

All I know isn’t much…but this stands out: CHRIS NOLAN made his first, indie feature film, THE FOLLOWING for: 6,000.00; shot it with his small crew and cast on weekends only…for a year; none of them stopped working their day jobs; none of them got paid up front for their weekends only work; they shot it on 16 mm; and they shot it in England — NOT NYC, or LA or SAN FRAN. They shot it on film! So…why, again, in this digital age with great low cost digital cameras and editing / SFX software and with so much talent in San Fran, along with great visual settings…is any moviemaker, crew and screenwriter, seriously thinking they can’t make a very cool, and probably financially successful feature for the same amount? After finishing up film school; crewing on numerous indie features; selling a few low, low budget specs; I chose to leave LA and the HWD system for awhile. I currently have prodcos reading some of my specs, but I’m not waiting on anyone to call me. I’m writing new specs and shooting a trailer for a proposed commercial feature pitch pack. But, I also have many spec scripts I’ve purposely written in different genres and for different budgets; high concept as well as indie feature levels. Many of them can be easily rewritten to fit the SAN FRANCISCO CITY setting, as well as the outlying rural areas. They’re genre scripts, which are meant to be easily adaptable for different budgets and locales. IF THERE ARE ANY producers; directors out there who want to take this same, EXACT approach that CHRIS NOLAN did on his first feature with some of my specs…I am more than willing to have discussions. In other words, WE ALL PUT our diverse talent, time and work ethics into the same pot — with no money up front — and work on shooting a digital based indie feature on so many weekends until it’s finished. Because of researching throughout the world-wide-web and coming across opinions which are not powerful, I believed my life was done. This site could not have been built without the help and insight of Michael Morgenstern. My thanks go out to him.

Help save indie film and give this guy a job in web design or film!
